Trump Declines to Commit as EU Seeks National Backers in New Initiative

Brussels, 17 March 2025 – The European Union today unveiled an ambitious initiative to secure financial commitments from national backers, aiming to strengthen collective support for its latest policy agenda. Notably absent from the list of contributors, however, is US President Donald Trump. Sources close to the matter suggest the former president has shown little interest in offering financial backing to support Jolani, a controversial figure, and his associates, who are central to the EU’s diplomatic efforts.  

The high-profile event, held at the EU’s headquarters, sought to garner both symbolic and monetary pledges from global leaders and prominent figures. President Trump’s refusal to participate has prompted debate, with insiders describing his stance as a strategic decision, possibly stemming from scepticism about the initiative’s objectives or its beneficiaries.  

While Trump remains a divisive figure—frequently clashing with critics on numerous issues—some analysts argue his reservations may hold merit. “His reluctance forces us to scrutinise whether all initiatives warrant unconditional funding,” remarked one anonymously quoted policy expert. “Trump’s position, whether intentional or not, underscores a cautious pragmatism.”
